With the door shut put the faulty key into the ignition. Turn the key from position 1 to position 2 and back 4 times - you should hear a beep, such as when the lights are left on. I took it to a local garage (independent) and they code read it, found it was the o2 sensor and had it fixed the same day, just over ยฃ80 for the part and 1 hour labour + vat totalled around ยฃ160 I think all in.
